One of the most common questions I get before a first appointment is simple: "Can I claim this back?" For many people the answer is yes, at least in part — but it depends on your scheme and plan, so it's worth understanding how it typically works.
How the billing works
Consultations are billed privately, and you're given a detailed invoice with the correct practice and procedure codes. Many clients then submit that invoice to their medical aid and claim back from their day-to-day or savings portion, depending on what their plan covers and what's left in it for the year. Some plans cover dietitian visits more generously than others, and chronic conditions (like diabetes) are sometimes treated differently — so the honest answer is "check your specific plan".
The Discovery Vitality bonus
If you're on Discovery, the Vitality Assessment is claimable through Vitality and awards 1000 points — a nice extra on top of the health benefit. It's one of the reasons many of my Discovery clients start there.
What to do
Keep every invoice, submit it promptly, and if you're unsure, phone your scheme and ask what they cover for a "registered dietitian consultation" on your plan. I'm happy to make sure your invoice has everything it needs to give you the best chance of a successful claim — just ask.
